Me against the world

Hey, you guys have been on a hiatus/ dog you don't even know how eight is/ 8 is Jigga, 8 is BIG/ 8 is pac/ten is me

A lot of of situations in my life make think about rhymes. For some reason this rhyme came to my mind with regards to my blog... By the way, if you want to hear the SICKEST FREESTYLE EVER you should listen to eminem and D 12's freestyle over "Got it twisted". Eminem actually freestyled in a language he invented! He also dissed George Bush, that alone should make it worth listening to. I would link to it here but I don't even have it on my computer anymore, and more importantly I'm not computer savvy enough.

But I digress.
The other day I was listening to a rap song and I did something that even I, the self proclaimed "hard core hip-hop fan", fail to do sometimes. I actually listened to the rhymes! And all I can say is that, I always say I prefer Biggie over Tupac ( and by extension Jay-z over Nas) because guess what? If I wanted to be educated and know what's happening in the world I would read books, the economist, or surf the web for news; not listen to Tupac or Nas. I want to be entertained... Dipset bitch!

But I have to give it to Tupac, that dude was deep.No wonder why, in certain universities they actually have classes strictly devoted to studying the man and his rhymes.
See for yourself:

With all this extra stressin. The question I wonder is after death, after my last breath/
When will I finaly get to rest?/
Through this supressionthey punish the people that's askin questions/
And those that possess, steal from the ones without possesions/
The message I stress: to make it stop, study your lessons/
Don't settle for less - even the genius asks-es questions/
Be grateful for blessings/
Don't ever change, keep your essence/
The power is in the people and politics we address/
Always do your best, don't let the pressure make you panic/
And when you get stranded/
And things don't go the way you planned it/
Dreamin of riches, in a position of makin a difference/
Politicians and hypocrites, they don't wanna listen/
If I'm insane, it's the fame made a brother change/
It wasn't nuttin like the game/
It's just me against the world

Ok I know that was a postito (my spanish for little post). But rest assured I'm working on something.
Another night in the streets... Anglophones beware

Hmm... that made me think!
I usually listen to hip-hop, coz a lot of them have jammin' beats and great music... as for the lyrics... those like ludacris and 50 cent just upset me (I don't even need to explain why), but rappers like tupac..nas...jay-z...some have 'meaning' behind that curtain of entertainment!
Also, maybe if they were clear enough for the non-ebonics speaking, articulate people... the 'ignorant' (in this case) wud know that hip-hop/rap isn't just all "guns n roses"!!!

Pretty deep!
But, although music is meant for entertainment, I think that what makes the more successful artists successful (in my humble opinion) is that these artists won't just throw words out there just cause they describe some thug life some kids aspire to have and the words happen to rhyme. Sure that's entertaining, and their rhymes are pretty sick, but its just nice on the surface.
For the more successful artists, their rhymes have a meaning and are put together in a certain way that convey a message, (and still entertain). That's something that the less talented artists don't always master.
There's a reason why music is an art form, and rap doesn't escape that just because some rappers have oversimplified it.
If they don't treat it as art, it doesn't have the full impact it could potentially have.
As you wrote, Tupac treated it as an art, and he had a strong impact.
And it was just that much more admirable because he actually used his talent to convey an intelligent message.
Just like any other form of art, some artists are more talented (voir: more 'deep') than others. And that talent often translates into educating (and still entertaining) whoever is appreciating the art form.
But then again, maybe in my ignorance I 'just don't get' some of the lyrics that I may think are superficial, but are really meaningful. Tout est possible... :)
